Leah Remini: Tales of a Former Scientologist
The much anticipated even has finally happened! Leah Remini gave an exclusive interview to Dan Harris on ABC’s 20/20 on Friday. Did we get what we were hoping for?
Well, more or less, but we have to bear in mind the fact that the interview was a part of the promotion of the actress’s upcoming autobiography “Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology.” For all those who still don’t know, Leah left the church in 2013, after being its member for more than 30 years.
She joined it when she was 8 years old, after her mother introduced her and her sister, and when she decided to leave, she was followed by other members of her family, including her husband, which is often not the case, as many people choose the religion over their family.
As we expected, one of the main protagonists of her story was Tom Cruise, a popular face of Scientology. It was at his wedding with Katie Holmes that Leah started asking questions that were forbidden by the church.
She was primarily puzzled with the fact that Scientology’s leader David Miscavige’s wife was missing, since she usually followed her husband everywhere. She also believes that she was asked to bring her friend Jennifer Lopez to the wedding, so that the singer would be recruited by the church.
After the wedding, she was attacked for her behavior by other members of the church, including Katie who wrote “a knowledge report” against her. As a consequence, Leah was sent to a church facility in Florida for “reprogramming,” which she had to pay for.
Although she had been thinking of leaving the church for a long time, she was inspired to make a final move when Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise. It brought back all the bad memories of their wedding and what she had went through in its aftermath.
Still, despite that Katie Holmes had been announced to appear on the special, she declined and released a statement instead:
“I regret having upset Leah in the past and wish her only the best in the future.”
